Cone Beam Computed Tomography (pronunciation: kohn beem kuhm-pyoot-ed tuh-mog-ruh-fee) is a medical imaging technique that uses X-ray technology to produce 3D images of the patient's anatomy. This technique is particularly useful in the field of dentistry, radiology, and orthopedics.

Etymology

The term "Cone Beam Computed Tomography" is derived from the cone-shaped beam of X-rays that the machine uses to capture the images. The term "computed tomography" refers to the process of creating a 3D image from a series of 2D images.

Procedure

In a Cone Beam Computed Tomography scan, the patient is positioned in the center of the machine, and the X-ray source and detector rotate around the patient, capturing multiple images from different angles. These images are then processed by a computer to create a 3D image of the patient's anatomy.

Applications

Cone Beam Computed Tomography is used in various medical fields. In dentistry, it is used to plan dental implants, detect dental diseases, and visualize abnormal teeth. In radiology, it is used to visualize the inner structures of the body, such as the bones and blood vessels. In orthopedics, it is used to diagnose and treat conditions related to the musculoskeletal system.
