Complication (pronunciation: /ˌkɒmplɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/) in the field of medicine refers to an unfavorable evolution or consequence of a disease, a health condition or a therapy. The disease can become worse in its severity or show a higher number of symptoms, become widespread in the body or affect additional body parts.

Etymology

The term "complication" comes from the Latin complicatio meaning "a folding together". In medical context, it is used to describe a situation where a disease or a condition occurs as a direct result of another.
