Command (Medicine)

Command (pronounced: /kəˈmand/) is a term used in the field of medicine to describe the ability of a patient to make known their wishes or instructions, particularly in the context of patient autonomy and informed consent.

Etymology

The term "command" originates from the Latin commandare, which means "to entrust" or "to commit to one's charge". In the medical context, it refers to the entrusting of decisions and instructions from the patient to the healthcare provider.

Related Terms

  • Patient Autonomy: The right of patients to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence the decision. Patient autonomy does allow for health care providers to educate the patient but does not allow the health care provider to make the decision for the patient.
  • Informed Consent: A process for getting permission before conducting a healthcare intervention on a person. A healthcare provider may ask a patient to consent to receive therapy before providing it, or a clinical researcher may ask a research participant before enrolling that person into a clinical trial.
  • Advance Directive: A legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.
  • Medical Ethics: A system of moral principles that apply values and judgments to the practice of medicine. As a scholarly discipline, medical ethics encompasses its practical application in clinical settings as well as work on its history, philosophy, theology, and sociology.
  • Healthcare Provider: A person or institution that provides preventive, curative, promotional, rehabilitative or palliative care services in a systematic way to individuals, families or communities.
