Columbus, Ohio (pronunciation: /kəˈlʌmbəs/ kə-LUM-bəs) is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is the 14th-most populous city in the United States, with a population of 892,533 as of 2018 estimates.

Etymology

The city was founded in 1812 at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, and was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer who is credited with discovering America.

History

Columbus was not the original capital of Ohio, but the state legislature decided to move the state government there after a short time. The city was incorporated as a city in 1834.
