Short definitioncolposcopy - (pronounced) (kol-POS-koh-pee) procedure that uses a lighted magnifying instrument called a colposcope to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva. During colposcopy, an instrument called a speculum is inserted into the vagina to expand it so the cervix can be seen better. A vinegar solution can be used to help visualize abnormal tissue with the colposcope. Tissue samples can be taken with a spoon-shaped instrument called a curette and examined under a microscope for signs of disease. Colposcopy can be used to look for cancers of the cervix, vagina, and vulva and for changes that can lead to cancer
