Coffee

Coffee (/ˈkɒfi/; from the Italian: caffè) is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain Coffea species.

Etymology

The word "coffee" entered the English language in 1582 via the Dutch koffie, borrowed from the Ottoman Turkish kahve, in turn borrowed from the Arabic qahwah (قهوة).

History

The history of coffee dates back to the 15th century, and possibly earlier with a number of reports and legends surrounding its first use. The native (undomesticated) origin of coffee is thought to have been Ethiopia, with several mythical accounts but no solid evidence.

Coffee production

Coffee production in different countries is responsible for the cultivation and export of coffee beans. Countries like Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia are among the largest producers of coffee beans in the world.

Coffee preparation

Coffee preparation involves the process of turning coffee beans into a beverage. While the particular steps vary with the type of coffee and with the raw materials, the process includes four basic steps; raw coffee beans must be roasted, the roasted coffee beans must then be ground, the ground coffee must then be mixed with hot water for a certain time (brewed), and finally the liquid coffee must be separated from the used grounds.

Health effects

The health effects of coffee have been studied to determine how coffee drinking affects humans. Coffee contains several compounds which can have both positive and negative effects on health.
