Coffea liberica (pronunciation: /kɒˈfiː.ə lɪˈbɛrɪkə/) is a species of flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae, from which a type of coffee is produced. It is native to western and central Africa from Liberia to Uganda and Angola, and is less popular than the other commercially cultivated species of coffee such as Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (Robusta), due to its more acquired taste.

Etymology

The name Coffea liberica is derived from the Latin Coffea, referring to the genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae, and liberica, which is a reference to Liberia in West Africa, where the plant is believed to have originated.

Description

Coffea liberica is an evergreen tree that grows up to 20 meters in height. The leaves are elliptical and shiny, while the flowers are fragrant and white. The fruits, or coffee cherries, are larger than those of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, and contain two seeds each, which are the coffee beans.

Cultivation and Use

Coffea liberica is cultivated primarily in Malaysia, where it was introduced in 1875 to replace the Coffea arabica plants decimated by disease. The beans of Coffea liberica are used to produce coffee, which has a unique flavor profile that includes floral and fruity notes, with a full body and a lingering aftertaste.
