Cochrane (organisation)

Cochrane (pronounced /ˈkɒkrən/) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to organizing medical research findings to facilitate evidence-based choices about health interventions.

Etymology

The organization is named after Archie Cochrane, a British epidemiologist considered a pioneer in the field of evidence-based medicine.

History

Cochrane was founded in 1993 under the name "The Cochrane Collaboration". Its aim was to systematize medical research information in a way that would aid decisions in health care. The organization was renamed as "Cochrane" in 2015.

Work

Cochrane's main product is the Cochrane Library, a collection of databases containing high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. The organization also produces Cochrane Reviews, systematic reviews of primary research in human health care and health policy.
