Preregistration (science)

Preregistration (pronounced: preh-ree-jis-tra-shun) in the context of science refers to the practice of registering the intended research protocol before the data are collected. This practice is increasingly being adopted in various scientific disciplines to increase transparency and reduce issues such as p-hacking and HARKing.

Etymology

The term "preregistration" is derived from the prefix "pre-" meaning "before" and "registration" which refers to the act of recording or enlisting. In this context, it refers to the act of documenting the research plan before the actual data collection takes place.

Related Terms

  • Registered Reports: A type of research article in which the methods and proposed analyses are preregistered and reviewed prior to research being conducted.
  • Open Science: A movement towards transparency, sharing, and reproducibility in research.
  • P-hacking: The misuse of data analysis to find patterns in data that can be presented as statistically significant when in fact there is no real underlying effect.
  • HARKing: Hypothesizing After the Results are Known; presenting a post-hoc hypothesis (i.e., one formed after inspecting the data) as if it were an a priori hypothesis.
