Clinical pathway (pronunciation: /ˈklɪnɪkəl ˈpaθweɪ/), also known as care pathway, integrated care pathway, or critical pathway, is a multidisciplinary management tool used in healthcare to plan and guide patient care.

Etymology

The term "clinical pathway" is derived from the medical field. "Clinical" comes from the Greek word "klinike" meaning "bedside", referring to the practice of medicine at the patient's bedside. "Pathway" refers to a course of action or a sequence of events.

Definition

A clinical pathway is a complex intervention for the mutual decision making and organization of care processes for a well-defined group of patients during a well-defined period. The aim of a clinical pathway is to enhance the quality of care by improving patient outcomes, promoting patient safety, increasing patient satisfaction, and optimizing the use of resources.
