Citrus aurantifolia

Citrus aurantifolia (pronunciation: /ˈsɪtrəs ɔːræntɪˈfaɪliːə/), commonly known as the Key lime, is a citrus species native to Southeast Asia. It is best known for its fruit, which is smaller and seedier, with a higher acidity, a stronger aroma, and a thinner rind, than that of the Persian lime (Citrus latifolia).

Etymology

The name "Citrus aurantifolia" is derived from the Latin words "citrus" meaning "citron tree", and "aurantifolia" meaning "golden-leaved". The common name "Key lime" refers to its association with the Florida Keys, where it is best known as the flavoring ingredient in Key lime pie.

Description

The Citrus aurantifolia tree is smaller than most other citrus trees, reaching up to 5 meters in height. It has sharp thorns and small, oval leaves. The fruit is round, green, and about 3-5 cm in diameter. The pulp of the fruit is juicy and acidic.

Cultivation and uses

Citrus aurantifolia is cultivated for its fruit, which is used in a variety of culinary applications. The juice of the Key lime is used in the preparation of Key lime pie, a traditional dessert of the Florida Keys. The fruit's high acidity makes it a powerful cleaning agent, and it is also used in the production of perfumes and aromatherapy products.
