Ciclesonide

Ciclesonide (pronounced as /sɪkˈlɛsənaɪd/) is a glucocorticoid used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It is marketed under the brand names Alvesco for asthma and Omnaris, Zetonna, and Alvesco for hay fever in the US and Canada.

Etymology

The name "Ciclesonide" is derived from the systematic IUPAC name: (R)-11β,16α,17,21-Tetrahydroxypregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione cyclic 16,17-acetal with cyclohexanecarboxaldehyde. The term is of modern Latin origin, with "Cicle" representing a shortened form of "cyclic", and "sonide" being a common suffix for corticosteroids.

Usage

Ciclesonide is used as a corticosteroid to treat inflammation in conditions such as asthma and allergic rhinitis. It works by reducing the swelling and irritation in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs, and helps to ease breathing problems and prevent asthma attacks.

Related Terms

  • Corticosteroid: A class of steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex of vertebrates, as well as the synthetic analogues of these hormones.

  • Allergic Rhinitis: A type of inflammation in the nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ciclesonide include headache, throat irritation, and upper respiratory tract infection. Serious side effects may include an allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
