Cheeseburger (/ˈtʃiːzbɜːrɡər/) is a type of hamburger that includes a slice of cheese traditionally placed on top of the meat patty.

Etymology

The term "cheeseburger" is a compound of the words "cheese" and "burger". The term "burger" is a shortened form of "hamburger", which is derived from Hamburg, a city in Germany where beef from Hamburg cows was ground and formed into patties. The addition of "cheese" to "burger" came about in the United States in the early 20th century, although the exact origin is disputed.

Ingredients

A cheeseburger consists of one or more cooked patties of ground meat, usually beef, placed inside a sliced bread roll or bun. The patty may be pan fried, grilled, smoked or flame broiled. Cheeseburgers are often served with lettuce, bacon, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, and sometimes, with a side of french fries.

Variations

Other variations include the patty melt, a version of the cheeseburger that is served on toasted bread, and the double cheeseburger, which includes two meat patties and two slices of cheese.

Health considerations

While cheeseburgers are a popular fast food item, they are high in saturated fats and calories. Regular consumption of cheeseburgers and other fast food items can lead to obesity, heart disease, and other health problems.
