Cheddar

Cheddar (/ˈtʃɛdər/) is a type of cheese originating from the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. While it is now made globally, only cheese produced in the traditional counties of Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall can be legally labelled as "West Country Farmhouse Cheddar".

Etymology

The term "Cheddar" comes from the Old English ceodor, meaning deep dark cavity or pouch. This is in reference to the Cheddar Gorge caves in Somerset where Cheddar cheese used to be stored to mature.
