Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School

Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (pronunciation: /ˈtʃærɪŋ krɒs ænd ˈwɛstmɪnstər ˈmɛdɪkəl skuːl/) was a UK based medical school that existed from 1984 to 1997. The school was formed by the merger of the Charing Cross Medical School and the Westminster Hospital Medical School.

Etymology

The name of the school is derived from its parent institutions, the Charing Cross Hospital and the Westminster Hospital. The term "Charing Cross" is believed to originate from the Eleanor cross at Charing, while "Westminster" is named after the City of Westminster, one of the boroughs of London.

History

The Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School was established in 1984 following the merger of two historic medical schools, the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and the Westminster Hospital Medical School. Both schools had a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The merged school continued to operate until 1997, when it was further merged with the Imperial College School of Medicine.
