Case mix

Case mix (pronounced: /keɪs mɪks/) is a term used in healthcare to describe the types of patients that a hospital or other health care facility treats. It is a way to categorize patients based on their clinical and demographic characteristics, including their diagnoses, procedures, age, gender, and other factors.

The term "case mix" is derived from the English words "case," meaning an instance of a particular situation or issue, and "mix," meaning a combination of different things.

Importance of Case mix

The case mix of a healthcare facility can have a significant impact on the facility's resources, including staffing, equipment, and financial resources. It can also affect the quality of care provided by the facility. For example, a hospital with a high case mix of complex, high-risk patients may need more specialized staff and equipment than a hospital with a simpler case mix.

Case mix index

The Case mix index (CMI) is a relative value assigned to a diagnosis-related group of patients in a medical care environment. The CMI is used in determining the allocation of resources to care for and/or treat the patients in the group.
