Cameroon

Cameroon (pronunciation: /ˌkæməˈruːn/), officially the Republic of Cameroon (French: République du Cameroun), is a country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west and north; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo to the south.

Etymology

The country's name, Cameroon, is derived from the Portuguese word, Camarões, meaning 'shrimps'. This name was given by the Portuguese explorer Fernão do Pó, who arrived at the Wouri River in 1472 and was amazed by the abundance of shrimps there.
