Breast Surgery

Breast surgery (/ˈbrɛst ˈsɜːrdʒəri/), from the Old English breost meaning "breast" and the Latin chirurgia meaning "hand work", is a surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or contour of the breasts.

Breast surgery can be performed for various reasons, including cosmetic, reconstructive, or cancer-related purposes.

Types of Breast Surgery

There are several types of breast surgery, including:

  • Mastectomy - This is a surgical procedure to remove all breast tissue from a breast as a way to treat or prevent breast cancer.
  • Lumpectomy - Also known as breast-conserving surgery, it involves removing the tumor and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Breast augmentation - This is a cosmetic surgery procedure to increase breast size and improve breast shape, typically through the placement of silicone or saline breast implants.
  • Breast reduction surgery - This procedure is done to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body.
  • Breast reconstruction - This is a procedure that is often performed after a mastectomy, to rebuild the breast mound to match the size and shape of the other breast.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgeries, breast surgery carries some risks and potential complications. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in breast sensation, and complications related to anesthesia.

Recovery

Recovery from breast surgery depends on the type of surgery performed. It may involve pain management, wound care, and physical therapy exercises. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon.
