Bowenoid Papulosis

Bowenoid papulosis (pronounced boh-WEEN-oid pap-yoo-LOH-sis) is a skin condition that is characterized by the presence of small, solid, raised bumps or lesions (papules) that resemble the skin changes seen in Bowen's disease.

Etymology

The term "Bowenoid" is derived from the name of the American dermatologist, John T. Bowen, who first described Bowen's disease. The term "papulosis" comes from the Latin word "papula", meaning "pimple", and the Greek suffix "-osis", indicating "abnormal condition".

Symptoms

The papules in Bowenoid papulosis are usually red, brown, or flesh-colored. They are often found on the genital or anal area, but can also appear on other parts of the body. The papules may be itchy or painful, but often cause no symptoms.

Causes

Bowenoid papulosis is caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV types 16 and 18. These are the same types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer in women.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Bowenoid papulosis is made by a skin biopsy, in which a small sample of skin is removed and examined under a microscope. The skin cells in Bowenoid papulosis have changes that are similar to those seen in Bowen's disease, but are confined to the top layer of the skin (epidermis).

Treatment

Treatment for Bowenoid papulosis may include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy, or surgical removal of the papules. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own without treatment.

Prognosis

While Bowenoid papulosis is not cancer, it is considered a precancerous condition because it can sometimes progress to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. However, this is rare and the condition is usually benign.
