Borg Scale

The Borg Scale (pronounced: /bɔːrg/), also known as the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale, is a tool used to measure physical exertion and pain during exercise.

Etymology

The Borg Scale is named after its creator, Swedish psychologist Gunnar Borg. Borg developed the scale in 1970 as a method of gauging an individual's perceived exertion during physical activity.

Description

The Borg Scale ranges from 6 to 20, where 6 means "no exertion at all" and 20 means "maximal exertion". The scale is designed to allow individuals to subjectively rate their level of exertion during exercise, taking into account their personal fitness level, environmental conditions, and their overall physical and mental state.

Usage

The Borg Scale is widely used in clinical settings and sports science research to assess an individual's level of exertion during physical activity. It is particularly useful in situations where it is not practical or possible to measure heart rate or oxygen consumption directly.
