Bloodstream

The Bloodstream (/ˈblʌdˌstriːm/), also known as the circulatory system, is a complex network of blood, blood vessels, and the heart, which is responsible for the transportation of nutrients, oxygen, hormones, and other essential elements to the cells throughout the body.

Etymology

The term "bloodstream" is derived from the English words "blood" and "stream", indicating the continuous flow of blood in the body.

Function

The primary function of the bloodstream is to maintain homeostasis within the body. It transports oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues while removing carbon dioxide and other waste products. The bloodstream also carries hormones and other signaling molecules, allowing communication between different parts of the body.

Components

The bloodstream consists of several components:

  • Blood: A body fluid that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells.
  • Heart: The organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system.
  • Blood Vessels: The channels through which the blood is distributed to body tissues.

  • Hemoglobin: A red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates.
  • Plasma (blood): The liquid component of blood, in which the blood cells are suspended.
  • Red blood cells: Cells that carry oxygen to the body's tissues.
  • White blood cells: Cells of the immune system involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.
