Biriyani (pronunciation: /bɪrɪˈjɑːni/) is a popular dish in the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East, and among the Diaspora from these areas. It is made with Indian spices, rice, and meat (chicken, beef, goat, pork, fish), and sometimes, in addition, eggs and/or vegetables such as potatoes.

Etymology

The name "Biriyani" is derived from the Persian language, which was used as an official language in different parts of medieval India by various Islamic dynasties. One theory is that it originates from "birinj", the Persian word for rice. Another theory is that it is derived from "biryan" or "beriyan" (to fry or roast).
