Azores

The Azores (pronunciation: /əˈzɔːrz/ ə-ZORZ; Portuguese: Açores, pronunciation: [ɐˈsoɾɨʃ]) is a group of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are an autonomous region of Portugal and are located about 1,360 km (850 mi) west of continental Portugal.

Etymology

The name "Azores" is thought to derive from the Portuguese word "açor", meaning goshawk, a bird that was common on the islands when the Portuguese first arrived. However, there are no longer any goshawks on the Azores, and the bird depicted on the regional flag and coat of arms is a buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi), known locally as a "milhafre".
