Awake (/əˈweɪk/) is a term used in medicine to describe the state of consciousness where an individual is fully alert, interactive, and oriented to their surroundings. It is the opposite of being asleep or unconscious.

The term "awake" originates from the Old English word "awacian," which means to arise or to spring into being. It has been used in the English language since the 14th century.
