Avogadro's Number (NA)

Avogadro's Number (pronounced: /ˌævəˈɡɑːdroʊz ˈnʌmbər/), also known as Avogadro's constant, is a fundamental constant of nature that defines the number of particles (such as atoms or molecules) in one mole of a substance. It is named after the Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro, who, in 1811, first proposed that the volume of a gas (at a given pressure and temperature) is proportional to the number of atoms or molecules regardless of the nature of the gas. The constant was named after him in recognition of his contributions to molecular theory.

The value of Avogadro's Number is approximately 6.02214076 × 1023 mol-1. This means that, for example, one mole of a substance will contain approximately 6.02214076 × 1023 atoms or molecules of that substance.

Etymology

The term "Avogadro's Number" is derived from the name of the Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro (1776–1856). Avogadro's name is also used in the term "Avogadro's law", which states that, under the same conditions of temperature and pressure, equal volumes of different gases contain an equal number of molecules.

Related Terms

  • Mole (unit): The mole is the unit of measurement in the International System of Units (SI) for amount of substance. It is defined as exactly 6.02214076 × 1023 elementary entities, which may be atoms, molecules, ions, or electrons.
  • Amedeo Avogadro: Amedeo Avogadro was an Italian scientist most noted for his contributions to molecular theory, including what is known as Avogadro's law.
  • Avogadro's law: Avogadro's law (also known as Avogadro's principle or Avogadro's hypothesis) is an experimental gas law relating the volume of a gas to the amount of substance of gas present.
