Avandamet

Avandamet (pronounced: /əˈvændəˌmɛt/) is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It is a combination of two drugs, rosiglitazone and metformin, which work together to improve blood sugar control.

Etymology

The name "Avandamet" is a portmanteau of the names of its two active ingredients, "Avandia" (the brand name for rosiglitazone) and "metformin".

Usage

Avandamet is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood. Avandamet works by decreasing the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb, and by helping the body to use insulin more efficiently.

Related Terms

  • Rosiglitazone: One of the active ingredients in Avandamet, rosiglitazone helps to control blood sugar levels by making the body's cells more sensitive to insulin.
  • Metformin: The other active ingredient in Avandamet, metformin works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and by making muscle tissue more sensitive to insulin so glucose can be absorbed.
  • Type 2 diabetes: A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).

Side Effects

Like all medications, Avandamet can cause side effects. The most common side effects include headache, muscle pain, and nausea. More serious side effects can include lactic acidosis, a build-up of lactic acid in the bloodstream, and heart problems.

Precautions

Before taking Avandamet, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease. Avandamet should not be used in patients with severe kidney disease or in patients with metabolic acidosis.
