Autism Research Institute

The Autism Research Institute (ARI) is a non-profit organization focused on conducting and promoting research on the causes of autism and on methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating autism and other severe behavioral disorders of childhood. It was founded in 1967 by Bernard Rimland, a research psychologist and father of a child with autism.

Pronunciation

Autism Research Institute: /ɔːˈtɪzəm rɪˈsɜːrtʃ ˈɪnstɪˌtuːt/

Etymology

The term "autism" is derived from the Greek word "autos," meaning "self." It was first used by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler in 1910 to describe a group of symptoms of schizophrenia. The term "research" comes from the Old French "recherche," meaning "to seek out," and "institute" comes from the Latin "institutum," meaning "facility" or "habit." The Autism Research Institute was so named because its purpose is to seek out knowledge about autism.
