Asteatosis (pronounced as as-tee-uh-toh-sis) is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal dryness of the skin due to the absence or reduction of sebaceous gland secretions.

Etymology

The term "Asteatosis" is derived from the Greek words "a-" meaning "without", "stear" or "stearos" meaning "tallow" and "-osis" meaning "condition".

Symptoms

The primary symptom of Asteatosis is dry skin that may appear rough, scaly or flaky. Other symptoms may include itching, redness, and skin irritation.

Treatment

Treatment for Asteatosis typically involves the use of moisturizers to hydrate the skin and restore the skin's natural oils. In severe cases, prescription creams or ointments may be recommended by a healthcare provider.
