The Armed Forces (pronunciation: /ˈɑːrmd ˈfɔːrsɪz/) are the military forces of a nation, typically consisting of an Army, Navy, and Air Force. In some countries, the Marine Corps and Coast Guard are also included as part of the Armed Forces.

Etymology

The term "Armed Forces" originates from the Latin "arma" meaning "weapons" and "forces" from the Latin "fortis" meaning "strong". Together, they represent a group that is "strong in weapons".
