Area source (pronunciation: /ˈɛəriə sɔːs/) is a term used in Epidemiology and Environmental Health to describe a source of pollution or contaminants that is diffused over a large geographical area.

Etymology

The term "Area Source" is derived from the English words "area" meaning a region or part of a town, a country, or the world, and "source" meaning a place, person, or thing from which something originates or can be obtained.

Definition

In the context of environmental health, an area source refers to a multitude of smaller sources of pollution that are spread out over a large geographical area. These sources can include, but are not limited to, residential wood burning, small businesses, and vehicle emissions.
