Architecture

Architecture (IPA: /ˈɑːrkɪtɛktʃər/, from the Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων (arkhitekton), arkhi-, "chief" + tekton, "builder") is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or other structures. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.

History

The history of architecture traces the changes in architecture through various traditions, regions, overarching stylistic trends, and dates. The branches of architecture are civil, sacred, naval, military, and landscape architecture.

Styles

Architectural styles classify architecture in terms of the use of form, techniques, materials, time period, region and other stylistic influences. It overlaps with, and emerges from the practice of, architectural history.

Design

Architectural design involves the creation of models, sketches, diagrams, and other drawings that show how a building will be built as well as what it will look like after it is constructed. It is used to present ideas to clients, planning officials, and others involved in the construction process.

Construction

Construction is the process of constructing a building or infrastructure. It differs from manufacturing in that manufacturing typically involves mass production of similar items without a designated purchaser, while construction typically takes place on location for a known client.
