Arbaclofen Placarbil

Arbaclofen Placarbil (pronunciation: ar-ba-clo-fen pla-car-bil) is a prodrug of R-baclofen, which is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) B receptor agonist.

Etymology

The name "Arbaclofen" is derived from the active ingredient "R-baclofen", while "Placarbil" refers to the prodrug technology used to improve the drug's absorption and bioavailability.

Pharmacology

Arbaclofen Placarbil is designed to overcome the limitations of R-baclofen, which include poor bioavailability and a short half-life. It is converted to R-baclofen in the body, which then acts on the GABA B receptors. This action helps to reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, thereby reducing spasticity and improving motor function.

Clinical Use

Arbaclofen Placarbil has been investigated for use in several neurological disorders, including spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and cerebral palsy. It has also been studied for its potential use in treating alcoholism and fragile X syndrome.
