The Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) test is a primary test to help evaluate a person for autoimmune disorders that affect many tissues and organs throughout the body (systemic) and is most often used as one of the tests to help diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Test Procedure
The Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) test is performed on a sample of a person's blood. The test detects the presence of ANA in the blood which are antibodies produced by the immune system that can attack the body's own cells.
Interpretation of Results
A positive ANA test result may suggest an autoimmune disease, but further specific testing is required to confirm a diagnosis. Some of the diseases that often exhibit positive ANA test results include Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren's Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Scleroderma.
Risks and Complications
Like any other blood tests, the ANA test also carries some risks such as minor bruising, bleeding, or infection at the spot where the needle was inserted.
