The term "animal-type" is derived from the Latin words "animalis" meaning animal and "type" meaning form or model.

Definition

Animal-type melanoma is a subtype of cutaneous melanoma, a type of skin cancer that originates from melanocytes, the cells that produce the pigment melanin. Unlike other forms of melanoma, animal-type melanoma is characterized by its aggressive behavior and poor prognosis.

Symptoms

The symptoms of animal-type melanoma are similar to those of other types of melanoma and may include a new, unusual growth or a change in an existing mole. The ABCDE rule of melanoma can be used to identify symptoms: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter greater than 6mm, and Evolving size, shape or color.

Causes

The exact cause of animal-type melanoma is unknown. However, like other forms of melanoma, it is believed to be caused by damage to the DNA of skin cells, particularly damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds.

Treatment

Treatment for animal-type melanoma typically involves surgery to remove the melanoma. Other treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.

Prognosis

The prognosis for animal-type melanoma is generally poor due to its aggressive nature and tendency to spread to other parts of the body.
