Ambenonium Chloride

Ambenonium chloride (pronunciation: am-be-NO-ni-um KLOR-ide) is a quaternary ammonium compound used as a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor in the management of myasthenia gravis, a long-term neuromuscular disease.

Etymology

The term 'Ambenonium chloride' is derived from its chemical structure. 'Am' stands for ammonium, 'ben' for benzene, and 'onium' is a common suffix for all quaternary ammonium compounds. 'Chloride' refers to the presence of a chlorine atom in the compound.

Pharmacology

Ambenonium chloride works by inhibiting the action of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine. By doing so, it increases the concentration of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, thereby improving muscle strength in patients with myasthenia gravis.
