Alsactide

Alsactide (pronounced al-SAC-tide) is a synthetic peptide used in the medical field. It is a hormone analogue, specifically a synthetic octapeptide analogue of Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH).

Etymology

The term "Alsactide" is derived from the first letters of the amino acids that make up its structure: Alanine (Al), Serine (S), Cysteine (C), Threonine (T), Isoleucine (I), Aspartic acid (D), and Glutamic acid (E).

Usage

Alsactide is used in diagnostic procedures to evaluate the function of the pituitary gland, specifically the secretion of growth hormone. It is administered intravenously and stimulates the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. This can help doctors diagnose conditions such as acromegaly, gigantism, and pituitary dwarfism.
