Allergy Test

An Allergy Test is a method used to identify substances that may cause an individual to have an allergic reaction. These substances, known as allergens, can include certain foods, dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and certain medications.

Pronunciation

Allergy Test: /ˈælərdʒi tɛst/

Etymology

The term "allergy" is derived from the Greek words "allos" meaning "other" and "ergon" meaning "work". The term "test" comes from the Old French "test", meaning "small vessel".

Types of Allergy Tests

There are several types of allergy tests, including:

  • Skin prick test: This is the most common type of allergy test. It involves placing a small amount of suspected allergens on the skin using a tiny needle prick. If the individual is allergic to the substance, they will develop a raised bump or reaction.
  • Blood test: This type of test measures the amount of certain antibodies in the bloodstream, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A higher amount of IgE antibodies can indicate an allergy.
  • Patch test: This test is used to identify substances that may cause contact dermatitis. It involves applying patches with test substances in small chambers to the skin for 48 hours.
  • Intradermal test: This test involves injecting a small amount of allergen into the skin. It is often used when a skin prick test does not yield a clear result.

Related Terms

  • Allergen: A substance that causes an allergic reaction.
  • Antibody: A protein produced by the body's immune system when it detects harmful substances.
  • Histamine: A compound that is released by cells in response to injury and in allergic and inflammatory reactions.
