Alice B Toklas

Alice B Toklas (pronounced: /ˈælɪs biː ˈtoʊkləs/) was an American-born member of the Parisian avant-garde of the early 20th century, and the life partner of American writer Gertrude Stein.

Etymology

The name Alice is of Old German origin, meaning "noble, exalted". The middle initial B stands for Babette, a French diminutive of Elizabeth, meaning "God is my oath". Toklas is a surname of Lithuanian origin.

Biography

Alice B Toklas was born in San Francisco, California, on April 30, 1877. She met Gertrude Stein in Paris in 1907, and they remained together until Stein's death in 1946. Toklas is best known for her book, The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook, which mixes autobiographical reminiscences with recipes.
