Alan Hodgkin

Alan Hodgkin (pronounced: AL-an HODG-kin) was a British physiologist and biophysicist, who is best known for his work on the nerve impulse.

Etymology

The name 'Alan Hodgkin' is of English origin. 'Alan' is a Celtic name meaning 'handsome', while 'Hodgkin' is a patronymic surname meaning 'son of Hodge', a diminutive form of the name 'Roger'.

Biography

Alan Lloyd Hodgkin was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England on February 5, 1914. He studied at the University of Cambridge where he developed an interest in neurophysiology. Hodgkin, along with Andrew Huxley, formulated the Hodgkin-Huxley model which explains how action potentials in neurons are initiated and propagated. This work won them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1963.
