Agouti-related peptide
Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) (/əˈɡuːti/ ə-GOO-tee) is a neuropeptide produced in the brain by the Agouti gene. The term "Agouti" is derived from a species of rodent in which the gene was first discovered.
Function
AgRP is involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis by inhibiting the melanocortin 3 and 4 receptors in the hypothalamus. It stimulates appetite and reduces metabolism, leading to increased energy storage.
Clinical significance
Alterations in the AgRP pathway have been implicated in obesity. AgRP is overexpressed in the hypothalamus of obese rodents and humans, suggesting a role in the development of obesity.
