The Acai Berry (pronunciation: ah-sigh-EE) is a small, round, deep purple fruit native to the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. It grows on the Acai Palm tree (Euterpe oleracea) and is known for its high antioxidant content.

Etymology

The word "Acai" comes from the Portuguese adaptation of the Tupian word íwaca'i, which means "fruit that cries or expels water".

Description

The Acai Berry is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and resembles a grape but is smaller and darker. It contains a single large seed and minimal pulp. The berries are harvested as food and are also used in traditional Amazonian medicine.
