Abortion in Slovakia

Abortion (əˈbɔːrʃən) is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. In Slovakia, abortion is legal and available on request during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. After this period, abortion is only permitted under certain circumstances, such as when the woman's life or health is at risk, or in cases of severe fetal abnormalities.

Etymology

The term "abortion" comes from the Latin word abortio, which means "to miscarry". The term is used in a medical context to refer to the intentional termination of a pregnancy.

Legal Status

Abortion in Slovakia is regulated by the Act No. 73/1986 Coll. on abortion, which was passed in 1986. This law allows for abortion on request up to the 12th week of pregnancy. After the 12th week, abortions are only allowed if the pregnancy poses a risk to the woman's life or health, or if there are severe fetal abnormalities.

Procedure

The most common method of abortion in Slovakia is surgical abortion, specifically vacuum aspiration. This procedure involves the removal of the fetus and placenta from the uterus using a suction device. Medical abortion, which involves the use of medication to terminate a pregnancy, is also available.
