Etymology

The name "Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality" was adopted in 1999 when the agency was reauthorized and received an expanded mandate to translate research findings into improved patient care. Prior to this, the agency was known as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.

Function

The AHRQ's mission is to produce evidence that makes healthcare safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to ensure that the evidence is understood and used. It achieves this through research that identifies the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high-quality care; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety.
